JSB Trio // DNA // Album
A mammoth. Green tea. A mosquito. A virus. What do they sound like? The JSB Trio has found a way to make them heard. Jürgen Berlakovich (guitar, bass, electronics) and Stefan Voglsinger (drums, electronics) are joined by DNA sequences to form an unusual trio in which genetic information becomes a third musical voice.
At the heart of their music is custom-developed software that translates DNA sequences into music based on the genetic code. Sonification means making data audible. In the JSB Trio, DNA sequences are transformed into electronic sounds, textures, rhythms and other musical parameters that actively participate in the music.
These algorithmically generated elements interact directly with guitar, bass and drums. Live playing and material derived from DNA become equal components of composition and improvisation. Depending on the sequence, different sonic and narrative spaces emerge.
The album DNA draws on sequences from a wide range of organisms: green tea, mammoth, mosquito, raspberry, peyote, the dengue virus, Plasmodium falciparum and eggplant. Each sequence provides source material and opens up new sonic possibilities.
The result is a soundscape where jazz, improvisation, electronic ambient textures, rock, techno and noise flow into one another. Rather than following a fixed genre logic, the JSB Trio uses these different musical languages as material for an open and genre-crossing unique sound.
DNA is not only the album’s title but also its musical principle. Organic information becomes sound as algorithmic processes meet composition and improvisation. The result is distinctive and uncompromising music that resists conventional categories and follows its own aesthetic logic.

JSB Trio

Jürgen Berlakovich uses a specially developed DNA sonification software for his compositions and live-sets. This DNA-sound-translator is able to transform DNA sequences into sound and music on the basis of a genetic system called Codon. The DNA sequences thus become almost fully-fledged musicians and independently „play“ various synthesizers and virtual electronic instruments.
Berlakovich performs live together with drummer Stefan Voglsinger. Interacting with various DNA sequences, they form an idiosyncratic musical trio that combines drums and bass and guitar riffs with DNA-generated electronic sound textures.
The resulting music spans – depending on the DNA sequences, for example from mammoths, peyote, dengue and malaria pathogens, various mosquito species or even the SARS-CoV-2 genome – a narrative framework of its own, oscillating musically between melancholic jazz sounds, ambient textures, rock and noise.

BIOGRAPHIES
Jürgen Berlakovich is an author, musician and soundartist. He writes, composes and produces novels, essays, film music, radio plays, podcasts, audiocartoons, soundscapes and songs. He uses DNA sonifications and linguistic microparticles in combination with guitar, bass and electronics for compositions and improvisations. He runs the JSB Trio, is an ensemble member of The Vegetable Orchestra and was the co-initiator of the literature and music performance duo Sergej Mohntau. Berlakovich studied german literature and philosophy at the University of Vienna. He developed the concept of Acoustic Poetics and currently teaches it at the ‘sfd-schule für dichtung’ in Vienna and the ‘Escuela de Escritores’ in Madrid. Performances and releases also under J.S. Berlakovich, JSB und Takamovsky.
Stefan Voglsinger is a musician, composer, and performer based in Vienna. He studied drums from an early age, earned a Master’s degree in Music and Movement Pedagogy and later specialized in sound design and film music during studies in Cuba. He has toured internationally and is known as an interdisciplinary experimenter working at the intersection of sound and image. He regularly conducts workshops at universities, schools, and festivals on music, D.I.Y. electronics and listening—combining music, movement, and technology in playful, hands-on formats. He develops compositions, performances and audiovisual installations using self-built and modified electronic circuits and curates concerts and transdisciplinary events at his artspace Setzkasten Wien. He works at the austrian film museum, curates the sound art festival Klangmanifeste and performs with the vegetable orchestra. Stefan Voglsinger performs outdoors, integrating environmental sounds and field recordings into his music. He works with unstable systems, merging electro-acoustic textures with environmental unpredictability. His improvisations bring the studio into the field – using reamping, resonators, and found objects as percussive elements.
JSB TRIO
